There is something that always puzzled me. What was the weakness of Abu Dharr?
From what we know, he was a tremendous man. A zahid, mujahid, incredibly firm on Faith, fearless, wise and eloquent. He was not afraid to confront powerful men, and speak against what he perceived as injustice. Yet, we know that Rasulullah ï·º stated that Abu Dharr was weak; so what was his weakness?
It seems to me that his weakness must have been precisely his absoluteness. His uncompromising positions, his strictness and his unwillingness to tolerate the weaknesses and mistakes of others. Perhaps he was too confrontational when he should have been more gentle and compassionate. Allah knows best.
I think it is important to understand this, because Rasulullah ï·º referred to Abu Dharr’s weakness in the context of refusing him a position of authority; so this can help us understand the qualities necessary for a leader. A leader must be sympathetic and patient with the flaws of the people, and must know how to rehabilitate their shortcomings in a way that will not alienate them.
