Over the years and various plans, I realized that escaping the prison could be done alone, but escaping capture once outside would require leaving the country, and for this, I needed help.
For this reason, I recruited an Afghani man who had friends outside willing to provide us with a car, and a Pakistani with connections to smugglers who could arrange a speed boat and passage to Iran.
Neither of these two, however, could be relied upon to fight. One was quite young, with a small physique, and the other was in his fifties and overweight.
I had already been planning to escape with my friend, a Sri Lankan whom Allah had brought to Islam by my da’awah, He had formerly been with the Tamil Tigers guerrilla group in Sri Lanka, and I myself taught him how to box, so I knew he could fight. He in turn recruited a friend of his, also a Sri Lankan new Muslim, who was quite fit and motivated.
For two brothers who were not capable of hand-to-hand fighting, I offered them improvised weapons. I removed the steel knobs from two faucets in our cell block and tied them inside two pairs of socks and showed them how to use them as effective bludgeons.
With a group of five, I knew we were enough to confront the police directly, and force our way right through the front door, if we did it the right way, at the right time.
