It should be obvious that democratic mechanisms cannot liberate …

Posted on October 11, 2015 by Shahid Bolsen

It should be obvious that democratic mechanisms cannot liberate an invaded country; democratic measures will not free Egypt or any other subjugated nation from the domination of corporate imperialism. The experience of Egypt is itself proof of this, as is the experience of Greece. Even the democratically elected governments of Mursi in Egypt and Syriza in Greece, found the power of the owners of capital impossible to defy; and Syriza may well eventually face the same fate as the Mursi administration if they prove incapable of implementing the neoliberal agenda quickly enough and harshly enough.

No, clearly, the country must first be liberated from the domination of the Empire of Capital, democratic mechanisms (whatever form they take) only have the potential to function in an independent state. Nevertheless, the opposition should articulate a clear vision for the system they intend to establish to replace the system they are opposing; a system in which the population has a voice in governmental decision-making within the boundaries of the Shari’ah, a system with mechanisms for the accountability of the ruler and a legal means of removing him from power.

Such mechanisms are particularly important in when we recognize the reality that we are living in the era of Mulk Jabaryy; an era in which the government will inevitably tend towards oppression and injustice, either by its own use of force, or because it is itself being forced by external powers. If we believe our Propet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), we know that we will not be able to achieve a utopian Islamic state in this era, but what we can only do is struggle to make the state more Islamic, more just, more righteous, and to restrict its power to oppress . If democratic mechanisms do not exist, this struggle will necessarily mean rebellion, bloodshed, and turmoil.

When we know that our governments are always going to incline towards injustice and oppression, and we know that the overwhelming majority of Muslims in the world support the implementation of the Shari’ah, there is, therefore, no way to advance the Islamic agenda except through popular participation in the government.
