The incident during my interrogation by State Security when they threatened to accuse me of secretly being a Jew and an Israeli agent is very informative about their mentality. Implicit in their threat is a serious degree of disbelief in Yaum al-Qiyamah, the Day on which every lie will be exposed as a lie, and all unclear matters will be clarified.
Al-Hamdulillah, I believe in this Day, and because of that belief, the threat didn’t disturb me. When they said it, I responded, “if you kill me on that basis, I will be a martyr unjustly accused and unjustly killed, and it will increase my status in front of Allah, so go ahead.”
We do not operate according to a timeline that ends at death.
But, you see, because they do not remember Yaum al-Qiyamah, they assume that no one remembers it, and they genuinely believe that they are the arbiters of truth and reality. They believed that, if they accused me of such a thing, even my own family would accept it as a fact, because they are State Security, infallible and indisputable. And, even if my family did believe it, my interrogators failed to realize that, eventually, my family would know the truth; because Yaum al-Qiyamah is real.
This reveals a pathological level of estrangement from reality. Power cannot allow itself to become this deluded; when authorities lose their objective awareness of reality, and begin to believe that they control what is true and what is untrue, it is only a matter of time before they lose control of everything.
