If this does in fact prove to be the case, it is a major development in the strategy of Daesh. I dismissed the claim of responsibility they issued due to their unlikely ability to shoot the plane down; but I did consider the possibility of the plane being taken down by an explosive device on board.
If the idea is that this will pressure Russia to cease military operations in Syria, I think it is mistaken.
Either way, this would mark a strange and important new dimension to Daesh’s strategy; the incorporation of traditional terrorist tactics to defend their territory.
