Answer:
The sources of income in Yemen are certainly more limited than in Egypt, it is true.

The point here is to look at the example of Yemen because it is so drastically illustrative of how harmful it is to empower foreign corporations with almost unlimited access and control over any country’s natural resources, and over its primary sources of revenue.

The same principle applies to Egypt, even if the sources of income are more diverse and the domination of the economy is more complex.

Regarding a solution, I don’t think I have ever suggested that it can be accomplished by means of demonstrations (if that is what you mean). Generally I am very critical of this tactic; I think its usefulness is very limited, and subject to many conditions.

I advocate a two-track strategy. One is to organize around specific issues and policy demands; for example, issues like contracts with energy companies, imposition of the VAT tax system, suspension of subsidies, privatization, and so on. Rebels need to heighten awareness of these issues and demand policies that are beneficial for the population and economic sovereignty.

The other track is the strategy of targeted system disruption against the profitability and operational efficiency of multinational corporations, to commandeer their unparalleled power in support of our policy demands.

Of course, they will not support what we call for, but if the only way they can continue to do business in Egypt is if they use their influence over the government to advocate rebel demands, they will do it.

They are pushing the agenda of neoliberalism now because it promises them tremendous profits, and there is no opposition. If rebels make this agenda painfully unprofitable, of course, business will acquiesce. Less profit than they hope for is still better than financial loss.
