Yes, Sisi is flooding the tunnels between Gaza and Egypt; cutting off the vital lifeline for goods for over 1 million Gazans, upon the request of Israel.
But it is important to remember that this is not a Sisi innovation. During his year in office, Muhammad Mursi ordered the Gaza tunnels to be pumped full of sewage water; and that was absolutely a Mursi innovation.
The Mubarak regime had made efforts here and there, to destroy the tunnels, but never with such fervor.
Mursi’s escalation of the campaign to obliterate the tunnels prompted Mahmud Zahar to say, “The previous [Egyptian] regime was cruel, but it never allowed Gaza to starve.”
Muslim Brotherhood supporters will argue that Mursi took this action because he intended to establish a Free Trade Zone with Gaza, thus eliminating the need for the tunnels.
There are at least two problems with this….
