mentioned the story of Abu Dujaanah at Uhud to illustrate that Rasulullah ï·º did not bestow an esteeemed position to someone simply because they sought it; he first ascertained that they would fulfill the trust implicit in that position; that they would do their duty with full commitment and diligence.
We can learn from this that it is incumbent upon us to examine, question, and evaluate anyone who is seeking to lead, to determine whether or not they will indeed fulfill the Amaanah.
With the Sahabah, all that was necessary was to ask them, because of their pious honesty and imaan. Today, we must be more circumspect and thorough in our examination of those who seek to attain leadership.
However, we have to bear in mind, that this examination has to do specifically with their qualifications for the position being sought, and their capabilities for fulfilling the duties it requires. Abu Dujaanah was not more religious, more knowledgeable about the Qur’an, more devoted to worship than others who sought to carry the Prophet’s sword…those admirable qualities were not relevant to the task at hand. Abu Dujaanah was a ferocious, fearless fighter capable of attacking the enemies of Islam with the sword of Rasulullah ï·º until it bent. Thus, Rasulullah ï·º determined Abu Dujaanah’s eligibility based on his competency for the particular duty he was offered.
Remember also, that no one took the initiative to approach Rasulullah ï·º about carrying his sword, they only sought it when he offered it. The one who seeks for leadership without it being offered to him, is immediately disqualified.
