Please don’t tell me that the Mursi administration had a wonderful plan for Egypt, but they just didn’t have enough time to achieve it.
We know very well what their plan was; it was whatever the IMF told them to do. They wanted more time to impose neoliberal reforms gradually; so if they would’ve had more time, that is what they would have done with it. That is what they said, so if you believe they would have done something else, you are saying they were lying.
Furthermore, the fact that they did not have more time is precisely because they committed themselves to an agenda that pitted them against the best interests of the population…they committed themselves to an agenda that requires dictatorial authority and repression to implement, and they are decent people, incapable of the brutality necessary to do it.
They thought they could coalesce with the army, with domestic business elites, and with the global owners of capital, to roll all together happily down the road of neoliberalism; but they were the broken wheel slowing down the pace, so they were removed. They attached their wheel to the wrong car, going down the wrong road.
They did not enter office with a revolutionary agenda, and until now, they do not have one.
