Imagine you are trying to make an agreement to buy a piece of land with a seller who is severely schizophrenic.
You ask him for a plot measuring 5 square meters, and he shows you a plot that is 5 square kilometers. You show him, on a measuring tape, “No, like this, 5 meters by 5 meters”, and he says, “yes, that’s what I showed you.” You tell him that he showed you 5 square kilometers, and he says, “No, these are meters according to our standards.” So, ok, you say, “Show me something that is…5 square millimeters then.” He shows you a piece of land measuring 10 inches.
You are getting confused. You tell him, “I don’t understand your system of measurement.” He says, “oh, well, our measurements change. Sometimes one meter is like this, and sometimes it is like that. We don’t believe in absolute measurements, our understanding of measurements is constantly evolving.”
Imagine trying to convince him that your system of measurement is compatible with his.
This is what we do any time we try to talk about the compatibility of Islam with Western values. Like the schizophrenic land owner, they use terms similar to ours…justice, peace, human rights…but these have no absolute definition for them. What was considered bad yesterday is considered good today. Perhaps one meter for them will measure the same as one meter for us today, but tomorrow it will be a mile, or a millimeter, or the distance between the earth and the sun.
They have schizophrenic values. Any discussion trying to compare absolute definitions with ever-changing definitions will inevitably descend into absurdity.
