If we learned anything from the Ridda Wars under Abu Bakr, the uprising against ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan, and the fitah between ‘Ali and Mu’awiyyah, it is that no matter how good a government may be, it cannot legislate the hearts of people.

If we claim that establishing an Islamic government (whatever that means) will offer a panacea for all human flaws, we are lying to ourselves and to everyone else.

Look, we do not have to come up with a system that will be perfect; we can’t. If there was a perfect system, Allah would have explicitly revealed that model for us. He didn’t. That means that all we can do is struggle politically and socially to make the government and the society more righteous, more virtuous, more Islamic…and what this will entail will vary from time to time and place to place; and the system through which we try to do this will also necessarily be flexible and changeable to respond to constantly evolving realities.
