As I have written several times, contrary to what is believed by those who make the absolute, unconditional declaration that democracy is kufr; there are dozens of democratic models and theories. If you mention any form of democracy that is something other than mob rule, the “democracy is kufr” clique will say that you are adding restrictions to democracy that transform it into something else. Because they have been told a definition of democracy by people lacking political education.
Look, you can impose whatever restrictions, systems of checks and balances, and limitations that you want. Don’t imagine that “democracy” ONLY means whatever system you think they have in the West. Like, “oh, if we have democracy, there will be gay marriage!” or something. Use your mind, Bro!
You can organize the electorate any way you like; if you want to do it by “one person, one vote” you can do it that way; if you want it to be done through delegates of districts, through electoral votes, whatever you like. You do realize that the president of the United States is not elected by way of a majority of individual votes, don’t you? There are innumerable ways to organize this system…but, of course, you have to actually understand politics to do that.
If you think that establishing an Islamic democracy seems very difficult; the immediate question I would ask you is, “so what?” I don’t agree with you, and I think that trying to establish an Islamic government by any other means is far more difficult, but, even if you are right, so what if it is difficult? Are you interested in doing what is easy to do, or what is best to do?
The truth is that if this is actually an impossibly difficult task, it has more to do with our own deficiency and incompetence than with the task itself. Overwhelming majorities in the Muslim world support making Shari’ah the law of the land. All you have to do is present a workable model, and mobilize the already enthusiastic population. But until now, our Islamist leaders have failed to do either, and instead we find this self-defeating denunciation of democracy, while it is, in fact, the absence of democracy that is hindering the political progress of the Islamic movement.
The model is obvious, the support is latent in our societies, and the only real obstacle we face is the interference of the West, specifically the economic domination of multinational corporations. And the islamist leadership also has no strategy for dealing with this obstacle.
So, yes, I suppose, if all you are willing to do is repeat empty slogans on one hand, or to blow things up on the other hand, then establishing a realistic Islamic system IS tremendously difficult. But, again, it is not difficult because of the challenge itself, but because we are too impatient or too inept to pursue it seriously.
