This is a good example of why it is so difficult to address extremism in our community. The article’s headline completely distorts what the writers are saying whom they quote; implying that they are criticizing Islam itself, and not misinterpretations of Islam, and this will discredit the writers and cause people to ignore anything they say.
The writers themselves have made the mistake of falling into the trap of the West’s dishonest narrative, though; adopting the position that extremism is prevalent and widespread in the Muslim community, and that “Islamic terrorism” is really some sort of epidemic problem; which is patently false.
This is why, whenever we enter this type of discussion, we need to begin from the point of correcting the fallacy: extremists are a tiny fraction of our Ummah, terrorism committed by Muslims is a minuscule portion of terrorist activity globally and in the West particularly. The attention given to Muslim terrorism is drastically disproportionate to its actual frequency and impact. Rather than discussing why there are extremist elements in the Muslim community, we should shift the discussion to ask why so much hysteria is caused by such a relatively minor phenomenon.
