Political Islam, or Islamism, represents the continuity of the Muslims’ belief in the legal and political supremacy of the Shari’ah in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. It is the torch we are carrying in the darkness of the absence of Islamic government.
It is a new name, created in a time of crisis, for a fundamental and continuous principle which does not change just because there is a crisis. It is like the keys held by Palestinian refugees to the homes from which they have been driven out, and which are now being occupied by Zionist immigrants who have changed all the locks. But we do not relinquish the right of Allah to rule, even if we have been bereft of governments that rule by Allah.
