It is important to understand that the whole dynamic of imperialism has changed.
In previous eras, imperial powers were nationalistic in nature; the British Empire, the French, the Spanish, and so on. That has largely changed.
It is no longer accurate to talk about America itself as an imperial power; rather, it is an instrument (the most powerful instrument) of a kind of global private imperialism, at the top of whose hierarchy is not a nationalistic emperor, but a collective of super wealthy individuals operating through corporate and financial institutions, who have no national loyalties; except in terms of preserving the power of the national instruments they rely upon for pursuing their interests.
