When the National Intelligence Council predicted in their most recent “Global Trends” forecast that there will no longer be a hegemonic power in the world by the year 2030; this is slightly misleading.
You may understand from this that the US will no longer be the dominant world power; but that is not exactly what they are saying.
They predict “coalitions and networks” of power that will work in concert to control the global order, rather than any single nation exerting total authority.
This, it should be obvious, refers to business; multinational corporations and financial institutions; which are creating, and will create, collaborative relationships with subordinate partners around the world to manage the affairs of each region.
Their term “diffusion of power” is just another way of saying the “decline of sovereign nation-states”; the transfer of control and authority from the political sphere into the economic sphere; and this includes control and authority in the United States.
When they predict that the US will no longer be the world’s predominant hegemonic power, they do not mean that US power will decrease, but that control of US power will be less and less nationalistic. The United States will be an instrument (the most powerful instrument) utilized by the new “coalitions and networks” of private power, which will enjoy a kind of collective hegemony
