The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has combined two very self-destructive things over the past several years:
Intellectual stagnation of the leadership, and inculcating obedience and conformity among the members.
They have, thus, subverted their own ability to evolve and progress by imposing loyalty to obsolete ideas among the young generation. Because they have neither provided effective strategies nor promoted critical thinking and creativity, frustrated youth are not equipped to develop effective strategies themselves. They have created a generation of followers, not leaders, yet they have no direction to follow.
This results in youth looking for someone to follow, rather than taking the lead themselves. They have raised the new generation to have an “employee” mentality instead of an “entrepreneur” mentality, and this will deliver them to other franchises, like Da’esh, if they become too exasperated with the incompetence of the Ikhwan leadership.
We keep hearing about “the new generation of the Brotherhood”, and waiting for their dynamism to emerge…but so far, it is rather like the hype about Artificial Intelligence and flying cars we were all told would appear in the future…we keep waiting, but nothing happens
