The UAE is an attractive destination both for tourists and expatriate professionals to live and work; but it is an incredibly risky place to go. The laws are strange, and enforcement is arbitrary.
You can find yourself in legal trouble suddenly and through no fault of your own. The Emirates is one of the most ruthless countries in the world about persecuting people in financial difficulty; you can go to jail for a bounced cheque, overdue utility bills, or for falling behind in payments on a bank loan.
You can get arrested for taking a selfie in the wrong place, or for even sending a Tweet or a message on Whatsapp to a friend, if the government doesn’t like it.
