Over the last several years, particularly in the United States, …

Posted on November 5, 2016 by Shahid Bolsen

Over the last several years, particularly in the United States, we often hear the argument that governments should be run like companies. OK, well, companies are run according to a strictly authoritarian model, with a tiny group of people involved in the decision-making process (board members and CEOs), making decisions to benefit another tiny group of people (shareholders) ; while the majority of people at a company have no say whatsoever, and if they fail to comply in any way with company policy, they are subject to immediate disciplinary action, possibly including job termination. So, is that really the model we want government to follow?

A better argument would be that companies should be run like a government. The majority should be represented in decision-making, and policies should reflect their interests. Those who produce the wealth should have a share in it, and have a say in how it is spent; just as should be the case with taxes and the allocation of the national budget.

No one in their right mind would advocate for government to be run like a company; they are the only institutions in society where it is admired to be mercenary, single-minded, short-sighted, and dictatorial.
