There is no greater method of coercion than poverty. The mere threat of poverty can topple decent people into violating their principles. Actual poverty can destroy one’s spirit.

Perhaps you blame the poor for not being as “religious” as you would like them to be. But the Sahabah disagreed with you. Remember the woman who needed water and the owner of the well allowed her to drink only if she slept with him? “She was forced” was the judgment of ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, and ‘Umar agreed with him.

If you want to destroy the people’s religion, impoverish them.

But still many of you will say economics has nothing to do with the “battle of ‘Aqeedah”… I would invite you then to barricade yourselves in the masjid, and leave political discourse for those who live in the real world.
