In the US, and, of course, in places like Morocco, Egypt, and elsewhere, labor unions have largely been appropriated by corporate management. They have become just another mechanism for controlling workers, subduing their demands, and serving the interests of shareholders. That doesn’t mean that organized labor, as a concept, should be abandoned. The existing structures have been compromised, if not completely subjugated in many cases; this simply means that a new effort needs to be made to organize workers outside of those impotent structures.
The global mobility of capital, however, is going to necessitate that any worker-based movement will have to be global as well. This must happen, and it will be an essential element of any international effort to democratize the political influence of corporations.
