Throughout the developing world, and indeed, increasingly in the so-called “developed world”, governments are no longer sovereign. They have power, but their power is subordinate to the power of the private sector. The only way for any social movement to effectively oppose governmental policy is to abandon the idea of influencing government directly, and to instead focus on influencing those forces which exert unparalleled influence over the government. It is to influence the influencers. That means corporations, banks, investment companies, and the interests of the elite class generally.
