The lifting of US sanctions against Sudan may present Sudanese opposition groups with their best chance of influencing policy change in the long term.
I know it may seem counter-intuitive, but the lifting of sanctions, and the inevitable influx of foreign investment is going to dramatically change the nature of the opposition struggle. Whatever sovereignty the government has is going to be eroded very quickly, and power and authority is going to be in the hands of multinational corporations and investors. Yes, on one hand, this is very bad. But in other ways, it is ideal for any resistance movement. Corporations are more vulnerable than governments, and their motives are transparent. You have a far greater advantage when dealing with companies; there are many ways to influence them, and they have the power to dictate policy.
You can expect, though, that anti-Austerity protests will be dealt with more harshly, and any attempts to disrupt corporate operations will be met with a violent response from the government. With the lifting of sanctions, the government is going to be hollowed out of almost all of its functions, except security. Their primary role will be to protect investment and to impose the agenda of corporate power at all costs.
It is going to be more important than ever that opposition groups build grassroots support on the basis of anti-Austerity demands, and not on the basis of overthrowing the government. Conditions for the people are going to get worse, though there may be some superficial improvements in terms of the availability of goods, and perhaps the creation of jobs in some sectors. But overall, what is going to happen is the colonization of Sudan, the integration of the country into the Empire of Capital; which means that every aspect of your lives is going to be shaped to serve the interests of foreign investors. You should exert the utmost effort to explain this to the population now, and you have to begin carefully following all business developments in the country, to start compiling a list of targets for disruption.
The time for the strategy of “No Justice, No Profit” is coming to Sudan, and this, insha’Allah, will empower you to achieve real change in the long term.
