Between all of these countries, Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia; which one has the most independence from the US? Obviously Turkey.
Syria is Turkey’s neighbor, and always will be. Turkey’s interest in the outcome of the Syrian conflict is transparent. It is a practical, geopolitical issue for Turkey; it is an economic issue and a security issue. And Turkey deals with it as such.
So what about the Gulf states? When you know that they are not independent, and they have no direct interests at stake in the conflict, what can you deduce about their involvement? They are conduits for the US, no more no less.
Turkey’s agreement with Russia over Aleppo was made without American participation; the US was excluded. They didn’t like it. And so, now Turkey is branded as a “traitor”.
