Food, shelter, and clothing are Human Rights granted by Allah in Islam,, and any Islamic government must guarantee and protect them. This should be the foundation of an Islamic economy. Before anything else, these rights must be secured for the population. The government must provide basic necessities, either in the form of commodities and property, subsidies, or direct payments by the state to its citizens; regardless of whether they have jobs or not. Hunger and homelessness are crimes committed by the state against the peope.
When you say this to a capitalist, he will scoff and respond, “if they people are given their livelihoods, no one will work!” But this same capitalist will also tell you that it is in the nature of men to be competitive, innovative, and to accumulate wealth. So, would their nature really change if they live in a state of security regarding their basic needs? Would they not still be driven to earn more than bare subsistence? Would they not still be driven to achieve, to improve their standard of living, to be creative and productive? Of course they would.
And if there are some people who choose to live exclusively on the bare minimum provided to them by the state, what is the harm in that? There would simply be more jobs available for the rest of the people who want to work.
It is amusing to me that whenever you advocate policies that promote social justice and economic parity, the Islamists will accuse you of being Marxist or Socialist or Leftist; but why is being Capitalist not a similarly derogatory accusation?
