By executive order, Donald Trump unequivocally killed the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement today. That is a very, very good beginning for launching a new era of American protectionist economic policy.
The agreement had been more or less defeated prior to Trump’s order, however, by the really remarkable and tireless efforts of grassroots organizations across the country. Nevertheless, Trump deserves credit for having taken a strong stand against the TPP throughout his campaign, and for making this one of the first acts of his administration.
He is also vowing to renegotiate a number of other trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement. I believe he will follow through on this.
It should be noted that Trump couldn’t have done anything to more quickly alienate the Republican congress.
