Doing what is right, precisely because it is right, does not prove to men convincingly that they are free.
Affirming to themselves that they have the ability to be defiant, and that they, therefore, possess free will, sometimes matters more to men than even their own benefit, safety, wealth, security, or indeed, their happiness.
