Major corporations wield enormous power, and they use that power exclusively to serve the interests of their shareholders; they use it to make money. If that means harming communities, depleting vital natural resources, undermining smaller competitors and bankrupting entrepreneurs; if it means ignoring, or even escalating conflicts around the world because it will open more market opportunities; so be it.
Most activists see this and conclude that corporations are pure evil. But this stance is unhelpful. I think it would be more useful, and more accurate, to characterize them as extremely dangerous (as, indeed, anyone with enormous power is dangerous). If corporations were persons, they would be archetypal sociopaths. That does not, however, make them unmanageable. That simply gives us the parameters of their values systems, which we can then use to develop mechanisms for managing them.
Corporations are what they are; they operate according to a very straightforward amoral logic. They exist, and they are not going away. We have to develop a way of dealing with them. We have to develop a relationship with them. This is unavoidable. Calling them “evil” and hating them is not going to change them. Their definition of morality is profitability, and immorality means whatever incurs financial loss. Again, this is what it is; there is no point protesting that corporations should define morality the same way that we do. They don’t, and they won’t. Our challenge is to figure out how to deal with these giant amoral entities to ensure that their power is not used to harm us.
This, of course, puts the responsibility on us; as individuals and collectively. And here, I think, is why we do not see much effort in this direction.
