When you undertake to atone for wrongs you have done, it is not simply about doing good deeds and trying to be a better person. It would be lovely if that is all you had to do. No. A penalty is due. That means that the good deeds you used to have easy access to do, become more difficult. You don’t get to just be better; the good things you will have to do will be harder to do, because you have a toll to pay. This is a necessary process; in that it helps you appreciate how much easier it is to just do the right thing from the beginning.
