There is a problematic trend I have noticed, particularly among younger activist Muslims, where they seem to assume their own position on various issues MUST be the Islamic position, because they are very sure that their own positions are moral and right, and since Islam is moral and right, the Islamic position has to be whatever they already believe.

I have literally seen people saying things like “you don’t have to ask scholars about an issue that is so morally clear. If any scholar disagrees, they are illegitimate and should be cast aside”

OK, so, do we really have to revisit this basic concept?

Islam does not follow your feelings, and if you are deciding your position on a matter without reference to Islam; you are a secularist. What we do, before we decide our stance on any issue, is to research the Islamic position first; learn the evidence, learn the opinions of the fuqahah, and study the applicability of that position (or those positions, if there are differences of opinion); and THEN decide where we stand.
