Every man needs a series of external levies between himself and violence and criminality. Chief among these is the family unit. He also needs to hold some standing in society, or at least the potential to achieve standing; and he needs some sort of meaningful work which is both fulfilling and financially sustaining. I’m afraid that internal levies against violence and criminality are often too susceptible to external circumstances and influences to be acceptably reliable. It seems to me that society must pay attention to this and seek to ensure the availability and the stability of such external levies for men across the socioeconomic spectrum.
