Belief in a transcendent power with authority that surpasses the state, belief in God, is immediately threatening to human systems of hierarchy and control. Such belief can only be tolerated when the concept of God is abstract, undemanding, amenable to personalised interpretations of good and evil, and a passive and materialist theology.
