Whenever an event occurred in Turkey that was likely to stimulate hysterical chatter on social media, the government would either block or slow down access to Twitter, Facebook and other platforms. Because, yeah, these can spread rumors, fake news, and panic. Yes, it also disrupted access to news and information, and it could be used to spin an official narrative — but social media is full of spin and bias too.

You can certainly argue that shutting down access to social media platforms is a curtailment of freedom of speech (you can also argue that it isn’t); but the amusing thing to me is that if governments were to block or interfere with access to social media today to stem the tide of hysteria over #coronavirus, people would undoubtedly protest this as a violation of their freedom…while they are locked in their homes under martial law, and totally fine with it.
