Nothing caused the prestige and popularity of Martin Luther King Jr. to decline near the end of his life more than the fact that he began to focus on poverty and class in America. It is no coincidence that this topic remains taboo today, and instead race is the only acceptable lens through which disparities of education, incarceration, crime, unemployment, and opportunities can be examined.
