Everyone is outraged by this #Netflix show that sexualizes 11-year-old girls; and they are right to be outraged. But I wonder how many of those protesting have ever opened #TikTok? Your problem is not Netflix, your problem is your culture. Real kids, not actresses, are being sexualized, being taught to sexualize themselves by the mainstream media they consume which aggressively hyper-sexualizes women, rewards sexual vulgarity, encourages self-objectification, monetizes debasement, is giddy with raunchiness, and applauds displays of licentiousness. I do not see how you can be enraged by “#Cuties” and defend “#WAP”.
Obviously, presenting children as sex objects is grotesque, and further enflames our fears of a drive to normalize #paedophilia. But, teaching underage girls that being sex objects is a praiseworthy and liberatory pursuit is more insidious and is already normalized. Do you imagine that there are not 11 year-olds right now mimicking what they see in music videos and films? You are worried about a predator while your daughters are being groomed every time they turn on the TV or watch music on YouTube.
Has society decided that only children should be moral beings, and that this obscene self-degradation and pornographic concept of what women should be suddenly becomes acceptable on a girl’s 18th birthday?
