The obligation of business to respond to market forces is a far better and more reliable mechanism for accountability than elections. The market holds elections every hour of every day. Every time you go shopping, you are participating in a referendum. Corporate leaders follow the ups and downs of their stock prices even more closely than politicians follow opinion polls. If stock traders know that the consumers are organised and unified and disciplined in their purchasing choices, and that the political activity of any given company is going to determine their buying habits; you will very quickly begin to see share values being determined by the social and political values expressed by those companies.
