President Biden’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, does not believe that Constitutional protections under the 1st Amendment apply to religious institutions:
“I think it is important to distinguish between protections that you are affording to the individual to exercise his or her religion freely,” Becerra said, “versus protections you are giving to some institution or entity who is essentially bootstrapping the first amendment protections on behalf of somebody else.”
This opinion will potentially impact the views religious institutions in the US are allowed to express in relation to, for instance, LGBT issues, transgenderism, abortion, sexual intercourse, drugs, vaccines, and so forth.
